During the first two weeks of the program, a day-trip will be organized to the US Department of Energy (DOE) Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, which is approximately a 2.5 hour drive from WSU. The purpose of the visit will be to tour aerosol chemistry labs at the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) national scientific user facility used by LAR faculty, and to visit the DOE Research Aircraft Facility (RAF). The EMSL contains state of the art equipment for measuring the chemical composition of particles and should provide an eye opening experience. Students will see an ion accelerator used to determine the elemental composition of particles collected on filters, visit an environmental electron microscopy lab, and see advanced research equipment such as a single particle mass spectrometer. We will coordinate the timing of the visit with the RAF so that students can see and climb aboard the G-1 aircraft as it is being equipped for atmospheric chemistry field research.
